How cedar
shingles are made. Shingles are sawn from a block of wood cut to the desired length of
the shingle. Clamped in to a carriage, the block is driven past a vertical
head saw, 48" in diameter. Each pass produces one tapered shingle, at
a rate of up to 36 per minute.
The shingle sawyer pulls the shingles away from the face of the head saw
and trims the edges on a second saw - called the jointer saw. The edges
are sawn parallel and square to the thicker butt end.
The juggling act continues as the sawyer grades the shingles as he tries
to maximize the yield from the raw material. The shingles are tossed down
the appropriate chute to the bundling area below, where they are graded
once again by the packer.
