Handsplit and Resawn Shakes - a.k.a. - shakes, 1/2 inch, Mediums, Heavies, Resaws, Handsplits, Jumbos and HSRS. Confused?! Don't worry - we'll try to help sort it out.

Red Cedar resawn shakes are available in two lengths - 18" and 24". The most common is 24". Handsplits are also available 1/2" and 3/4" thick - the most common being 1/2" Mediums. Heavies, or 3/4" Heavy Resaws are also widely used. Thicker shakes are available on a custom cut basis and they are usually referred to as Jumbos. There are two main grades for all handsplit and resawn shakes - Premium Grade Blue Label and No.1 Grade Blue Label. Premium Grade shakes allow only 100% Edge Grain, 100% Heartwood and are 100% Clear. No.1 Grade Blue Label are exactly the same except that they allow up to 20% Flat Grain mixed with the edge grain. No.1 Grade Blue Label 1/2" x 24" Medium Handsplit and Resawn shakes are, by far the most common shake on the market.
