The term "Perfection" refers to all red cedar shingles that are
18", (457mm) in length, in all grades. Perfection shingles are 0.45"
(11.4mm) thick, (nominal - all grades). The recommended exposure for an 18"
shingle roof is 5-1/2" (140mm) for a 3-ply, water tight construction.
Western Red Cedar 18" Perfections are the most common shingle and are
used in many markets around the world. The biggest market for
Perfections are the Northeast states of the US where they have been used on the
roofs and walls for over 100 years. They are also used in other markets
throughout North America, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, Japan, Korea and
Europe.
These 18" roofing shingles are also the raw material used to manufacture
the "Re-butted and Re-jointed", (R&R) sidewall shingles and
machine grooved shakes. One of the most dominant architectural styles
known in North America for many decades, (and enjoying a recent resurgence) is the use
of red cedar sidewall shingles along the eastern seaboard in areas such as Cape
Cod, Nantucket, Long Island and the like. See our separate catalog section for
R&R Sidewall Shingles in The Wood Roof Store.
The vast majority of red cedar 18" Perfection shingles and the
remanufactured R&R sidewall shingles are produced in southwestern British
Columbia and shipped to market through the port of Vancouver and it's suburbs.
