Western Red Cedar shingles are sawn wood tiles for use on roofs and walls.
They come in three sizes - 16" (406mm), 18" (457mm) and 24"
(610mm) and each size has their own trade name. 16" shingles are called
"Five X" (5X and XXXXX), 18" are "Perfections" and
24" are known as "Royals". In each case, the trade name is used
when referring to all grades of that size - i.e. #3 Grade 18" Perfections.
These terms have been used for over 100 years.
Each size of shingle comes in four grades - No.1 Grade Blue Label,
No.2 Grade Red Label, No.3 Grade Black Label and No.4 Grade Green Label
Undercoursing. This web site offers and fully describes 16", 18" and 24" shingles
in No.1 and No. 2 grades. Please contact us with your enquiries for #3 or #4
Grades.
Shingle roofs are based on a three layer
(3-ply) construction and are packaged accordingly. Four bundles of shingles will
cover one roofing square - 100 sq.ft. (9.3 m2) when applied at the recommended
amount of overlap, or exposure - 5" (125mm) for 16" shingles,
5-1/2" (140mm) for 18" shingles and 7-1/2" (190mm) for 24"
shingles.
